Real Mountain Values started as a running joke between myself, Brianna Willis and my husband, Patrick. A certain politician ran a campaign that constantly discussed mountain values. To tell you the truth Patrick and I don't remember that much about the campaign other than every time we would see a sign or commercial we would discuss exactly what made up a mountain value... Shotgun weddings?

Amendment One and North Carolina

amendment-one

I’ve struggled all day with my thoughts on the recent passing of Amendment One in North Carolina.  I feel such a impotent rage that I can’t even describe.  I’ve thought of a thousand things that I want to say to all the people that voted for such a hate filled amendment.  I want someone to frame a logical argument for its passage.

By logical I don’t mean telling me that homosexuality will kill values or is akin to pedophilia.  (Sadly, I’m not joking about the last argument. I actually saw that one in a facebook feed).  I want concrete numbers that

Welcome to the Newest Member of Real Mountain Values

conlan-michael-willis

So where have we been?  Taking a break to spend some time with our newest family member:

Conlan Michael Willis

Officially I am completely outnumbered by the boys now, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  During this time my sister-in-law had her second child as well, so we now have two two-year-olds and two newborns between us.  Luckily she has two girls so when we all get together there is a nice even mix.

Since we are pretty sure this is our last go-around with the kiddos I am trying to enjoy the babyhood since I’ll have

Waiting and Anticipating

Gods above, I had forgotten how time STANDS STILL the last few weeks of your pregnancy.  While I’m trying to savor the time left as a family of three I must admit I am ready for pregnancy to be over.

My impatience stems from the fact that well…  I’m fairly impatient to begin with, I’m in pain, and have very little in the way of distractions currently.  As my sister-in-law so aptly put it: everyday seems like groundhog day in the last few weeks of pregnancy.  I go to work, pick up McClain, lay around nursing my back and waiting

Utter Failure

mcclain-2-years

Today I’m linking this blog to “Imagine the Impossibilities” 2012 Challenge. Why, because today was the day where I was supposed to wrap up all the amazing couch crafts I have created? But to be honest it was an utter failure. I’m embarrassed because whenever I have signed up to do a challenge on the internet I ALWAYS complete them. Why? Because I’m that type A personality.

Sure I did a couple of crafts you can read about here and here. And one that never even made it to posting (in the drafts file) but the plan was to show a

A little Winter Refresher

I would like to call this photo "Beer Still Life No. 7"

Well, it’s been a while since I posted, but I’m finally back with another round from the Champion Brewery. Since it’s a bit cool this time of year, and since I’m a cheap bastard, I decided to get a lager recipe from the local brew store to try out. This was my first attempt at such a recipe, and I was very nervous how it was going to turn out. Thankfully, it’s as good as it looks:

I would like to call this photo "Beer Still Life No. 7".

You see, brewing lagers in the winter fits right

A New Year, A New RMV

You didn't think we were going to get rid of the blue did you?

You might have noticed the posting/craftiness has been a little bit light this week.  I haven’t abandoned the blog, just been working on an awesome behind the scenes project;  facelift for Real Mountain Values.  Plus a whole lot of recategorization, linking etc.  Which will make it easier for you, dear reader, to find your favorite tutorials, inspiration, and general awesomeness.

I’ll give you a little sneak peak:

You didn't think we were going to get rid of the blue did you?

I have a bunch of great ideas for 2012 BUT I would love to hear anything you would

Canton, NC Christmas Parade 2011

The local high school band ramped up the Christmas mood by marching and playing carols.

Last night McClain went to his first ever Christmas Parade.  The first two parades had to pass him by.  The first one he only a 7 lb newborn, so even I had enough sense to keep him out of the cold (This year it was a balmy 35 degrees).  The second parade he slept through.  So I was excited to take him to his first one this year.

We massively bundled up, enjoyed the Christmas lights at this night parade, and got in the Christmas spirit by waving at Santa Claus.  If this doesn’t spur me to finish my Christmas

How to Relax During the Holidays

stress

The holidays should be a fun time!  Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Years…  But with so much packed into a couple of months it can often get very stressful.  Add into that mix travel, decorations, melding family traditions, and of course spending money, it is no wonder that we can end up forgetting to relax and enjoy the season.  There are a lot of guides out there to help you de-stress and relax during the holidays that range from the gambit of get more sunlight too getting a massage.  If these work for you then by all means go for it!  However,

As a friend recently told us: Make sure to gobble until you wobble!

The Pumpkin that Wasn’t

Well, the pumpkin batch is done and has been tasted. And yet again, more experimentation must be done. And by more experimentation, I mean no more pussy-footing around. This batch was good-as a plain American ale. There may be a slight hint or two of pumpkin in there, but not enough to really make you say “Wow! That’s some good gosh-darn Pumpkin Brew!” As for the nutmeg and cinnamon, I’m probably going to quadruple what the recipe says I should use. The next batch, I’m going balls-out.  I will taste some nutmeg, cinnamon and pumpkin next time. Brianna bought another pumpkin, and
