If a church or synagogue wanted to ban gay marriages they would have every right to do so. But I shouldn't have to confirm to the rules of someone’s church because I live in the same state as that church. The US Constitution is pretty clear on that. It is sort of funny that this was amendment 1 in North Carolina, because it is the first amendment of the us constitution that is being violated.

The country has a history of treating people differently who are not like them: the Irish, Blacks, and the Japanese. One would think that we have made some progress, that over the course of 200 years, we have made some progress that humanity has gotten just a little bit better. Nope. North Carolina proved that we are still the same closed minded unenlightened buch. We just carry iPhones now instead of lanterns.

What is most telling is that this amendment did not only stop marriages, it also stopped domestic partnerships. How does someone being able to see the person they love in the hospital hurt your family? How is it anything other then being discriminatory?

I recently did a photo shoot for two lesbians and their adopted son. They are trying to adopt another baby and were putting together a portfolio and thus needed the pictures. Their first baby was from a poor section of inner city Atlanta by a mother who did not want him. How can anyone honestly say that his life to two loving and successful Mothers is worse off then where he came from?

He is just a child. The passage of this amendment hurts him.

People can stand up and say how much faith they have and how much they love God and love their fellow man, but if they voted affirmative for this amendment null and voids that argument.

Not that I have an opinion :)

I guess that is one of the things that most upsets me, the hypocritical nature of being a proclaimed fundamentalist Christian but only following select portions that fit your ideals. Well that and the lack of thought... I get tired of people making decisions for me without any research or thought.

Faith is not based in logic but doesn't necessarily preclude the use of it :). And just to make certain no one misunderstands, I would be just as angry if the government was trying to tell churches what to do. Government needs to focus on Earthly issues and churches can work on our morals.

Faith is not based on logic. I no longer try to have logical conversations about social issues with people whose positions are based entirely on their faith (or their (mis)understanding of what their faith decrees). I've found there's no point in having one because we are talking apples and oranges.

This is why I am more convinced than ever that faith should play no role in public policy. Personally, I think we need to redefine marriage. Let's make marriage a thing of religion. If it were solely religious, I would have no problem with any church that wants to confine it to men and women. (Or dogs or chickens or whatever.) I won't be joining such a church, but hey--it's a free country, right? And let's make civil unions the social contract that provides all the current rights and responsibilities of marriage. (Civil unions currently provide some, but not all and it varies by state.)

And thanks for sticking your neck out there to take a stand!

Very well said. I agree with you completely. I just don't understand the thought process behind it. And I have yet to hear a logical argument because I'm pretty sure there isn't one. I can only hope that one day people will come around. Maybe they'll start reading the part of the Bible that I read--it says love thy neighbor and I'm pretty sure one of the main themes is not to judge.
